Introducing Australia's Most Sustainable Yoga bolster

My Journey to Creating Real Change

What Makes this yoga bolster sustainable?

When I started MOBECO, I didn’t set out to create “Australia’s most sustainable yoga bolster.” Honestly, I just wanted to make yoga props that didn’t fill me with guilt every time I used them. But as I researched, questioned, and dug deeper into where materials come from and what they cost our planet, I realized that sustainability isn’t just about good intentions—it’s about the thousands of small decisions that add up to real environmental impact.

Today, I want to share what I’ve learned, the choices we’ve made at MOBECO, and why they matter. Because if you’re investing in a yoga bolster, you deserve to know exactly what you’re supporting.

The Kapok Problem:Why Imported Filling Isn’t as Sustainable as It Seems

Image

When I first researched yoga bolster fillings, kapok seemed like the obvious choice. It’s natural, it’s lightweight, it’s what many established brands use. But the more I dug, the more I realized kapok tells a different environmental story than the marketing suggests.

Kapok comes primarily from Southeast Asia—Indonesia, Thailand, and other regions far from where most of us live. That distance matters. A lot.

Here’s what happens: kapok is heavier than you’d think. When you’re shipping large quantities of filled bolsters, or even just the raw kapok material, you’re looking at significant weight. That weight directly translates to fuel consumption, carbon emissions, and environmental impact. A bolster filled with imported kapok shipped from overseas to Australia? That’s a journey with a heavy carbon footprint before it even reaches your door.

And it’s not just about the material itself. It’s about the entire supply chain. Sourcing, processing, packaging, and shipping kapok across continents creates layers of emissions that most consumers never think about. But I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

The Queensland Solution: Why I Chose Australian Buckwheat Hull

Our yoga bolster serves a multitude of purposes to enhance your yoga practice and overall well-being. It provides support and alignment in various poses, such as seated forward bends, restorative backbends, and gentle chest openers. Additionally, it can be utilised during meditation to promote comfort and relaxation, as well as in prenatal yoga to alleviate discomfort and support the body. Off the mat, it doubles as a versatile cushion for relaxation, reading, or even as a supportive prop during physical therapy exercises, recovery from trauma or injury and can even benefit the elderly, disabled or new mums who need extra comfort and support during day to day activities.

Buckwheat Hulls

The answer was literally in my backyard—well, in Queensland, where I’m based on the Gold Coast.

Australia has a thriving buckwheat industry. Buckwheat is grown here, processed here, and—this is the crucial part—it creates waste. When buckwheat is harvested and processed for food, the hulls are often discarded. I realised we could rescue that waste, give it purpose, and create something genuinely sustainable.

Buckwheat hull filling offers everything kapok does, but without the environmental cost of international shipping. Here’s why this matters:

Shorter supply chain = Lower emissions. Our buckwheat comes from Queensland farms, just a few hours from our Gold Coast HQ. We’re talking about minimal travel miles compared to shipping from Southeast Asia. That’s real carbon savings, not just marketing speak.

We’re solving a waste problem. By using buckwheat hulls that would otherwise be discarded, we’re diverting waste from landfills and giving it a second life. This is circular economy in action—not just a buzzword, but an actual practice.

The weight advantage

Buckwheat hull is the perfect weight-to-support ratio. It’s heavier and denser making it far more stable and comfortable to use. When I made the decision to use Australian buckwheat hull, I wasn’t just choosing a filling material. I was choosing a philosophy: source locally, reduce travel miles, minimise emissions, and support Australian agriculture.

The Natural Dyes

Now, you might notice that while we source buckwheat locally, we do import our covers and liners from India. And yes, that’s intentional.

Here’s the thing about sustainability: it’s not always black and white. It’s about making the smartest choices at every step. India has incredible textile expertise and ethical manufacturing practices that we trust. We import the covers and liners—which are lightweight compared to filled bolsters—and then hand-fill them here in Australia with our local buckwheat.

This approach minimizes weight in international shipping while ensuring quality and ethical production. It’s a compromise, but it’s a smart one.

And then there’s the natural dyes. All our covers are dyed with natural dyes in India—plant-based, non-toxic, beautiful. We didn’t want bolsters that looked sustainable while being made with harsh chemicals and synthetic dyes. The whole product needed to reflect our values, from the inside out.

The Vegan Connection: Why My Personal Values Matter to the Planet

Here’s where it gets personal. I’m vegan. Our founding team is vegan. And this isn’t separate from MOBECO’s mission—it’s central to it.

I’ve done a lot of research on the environmental impact of veganism, and the numbers are staggering. A plant-based diet has a fraction of the environmental footprint of a diet that includes animal products. We’re talking about water usage, land use, greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity loss. One person living vegan for a year can save the equivalent of thousands of gallons of water and reduce their carbon footprint significantly. (If you want the exact numbers, I’d encourage you to research organizations like Our World in Data or The Farm Transparency Project—the research is out there.)

When I decided to create MOBECO, sustainability was at the heart of it all.

It felt hypocritical to care deeply about reducing emissions and environmental impact while supporting industries that cause massive ecological harm.

So I made the choice 12 months ago to be vegan.

MOBECO is vegan. No animal products. No compromise.

This might seem like a small detail, but it’s not. It’s a statement about what we believe matters. And it’s a reminder that sustainability isn’t just about one product—it’s about a whole way of living and doing business.

Why Investing in Vegan Businesses Matters

If you’re reading this and you care about the environment, I want to encourage you to think about where your money goes. Every purchase is a vote for the kind of world you want to live in.

When you invest in vegan businesses—whether that’s food, fashion, wellness products, or anything else—you’re supporting companies that have already made the hard choice to reduce their environmental impact. You’re saying: I want this. I value this. Keep going.

It creates market demand. It shows investors and entrepreneurs that sustainability and ethics aren’t niche concerns—they’re what consumers actually want. And that shifts the entire industry.

At MOBECO, every time someone chooses our yoga bolster over another brand, they’re not just getting a beautiful, sustainable prop. They’re voting for a supply chain that values local sourcing, for businesses that take veganism seriously, for companies that sweat the small details because they know it all adds up.
